Similar to what Jim Gamble posted back June of last year.

Why would you precoat with Pgloss? Results aren't that different with just plain epoxy and skipping the pgloss step.

Nice. But I got the same question as Alex. I just may have to buy some silk now.

Because I have always used Permagloss to do these type wraps. This is not the first one I've done. They go back many years. I would skip epoxy altogether if I could because eventually any epoxy is going to yellow and mark the wrap. But Permagloss will not give you the super smooth top coat that an epoxy can.

Bill - Since you are in SC also I would love to talk and learn a little from you if possible. Please drop me a line at contact@alxrods.com or let me know how to contact you. I've tried to find contact info for you in the past but you seem to be a hard man to find. I've looked around at tournaments for some of your rods hoping, but no luck their either. Look forward to talking more!

I get what you are saying about the pgloss not yellowing, but wasn't sure why you'd worry with thinning, etc since you have the epoxy top coat that's going to yellow anyway.

My E-mail address should come up when you click on any of my posts. williamcolby2003@yahoo.com
You would be a couple hours southwest of me if memory of Aiken serves correctly. I travel for a living but am usually home the last week of each month.
I do not trust epoxy that has been thinned. All sorts of things can go wrong once you add any sort of thinner or solvent to them. Premature cracking and checking, too hard, not hard enough. So on and so forth. That will not happen with thinned Permagloss as it contains a solvent to begin with. It's made to be thinned if desired.

I tried this a month or so ago and my results were a little different. I used Gudebrod 00 white silk and first coat of finish was with thinned FC lite, 2nd coat full strength FC lite. My wraps seemed to have a tint to them similar to Stren original fluorescent fishing line. It looks pretty neat, but it is far from the clarity you have. What color silk thread did you use? I'll try and post a picture in a week or so. I'm in the process of moving.

Like the look where did you get the 00 silk thread? Thinking about doing this on 6wt. fly rod.
