I cut a lengthwise section out of one of the cardboard tubes my blanks come in so that I can save paint or clear finish instead of spraying one blank at a time vertically.

Thank You, it works really well and saves my back. Bending over to spray the bottom of the blank when I used to spray them standing vertical killed my back and wasted material. I can give you more detailed instructions if you want, not that it is all that complicated.

That is a pretty slick idea however how does it do when spraying clear coat. My first thought is that with the tube being in a round shape it would swirl the clear around inside and possibly leave a dry over spray on portions of the rod...

If thats not the case then im totally on board as it would be way easier then spraying vertical

Casey, I had the same concern, but since it is sprayed all at once, the overspray you are concerned about absorbs into the wet finish. However, if you were to say spray one blank, leave it in there to dry then spray another while the previous is still there, then your hosed. The reason there are dowels that stick out the end is so you can rotate the blanks to get the other side while they are still wet, so there is problem with the issue that you had concern with. I have painted and applied clear coats to 6 blanks in that tube without issue.
