How do you bore out the middle? Is it heavy?

Soapstone works easier than wood/cork. I used a hack saw to rough out a block and then drilled it from both ends (short bits) with a cordless drill, and then onto a mandrel. The insert weighs .8 oz and the whole reel seat weighs 1.5 oz. BTW, I am not military, I am a volunteer at a school for missionary kids.
