If you can get a photo of the back side of the rod you'll know for sure. I have done similar wraps wrapping two colors and then removing one or the other as the sacrificial spacing thread, keeping the tag end of that thread underneath the opposite color, then switching the process for the next color change. I'm sure there are several ways to do it, but each method will leave the telltale sign of "how" on the back side of the wrap.

I think that's Randy Search's wrap. I remember seeing the steps on another board; I would contact Randy directly. I think that he has photos of the steps and possibly a tutorial on the wrap.
